Ddrescue gui linux8/28/2023 Tape library Data Storage, Backup & Recovery. It just depends how far down the rabbit hole you're willing to go. If none of those options work, there's still more you can do on your own. Spinrite is another option for physical repair. If you are going to use a Linux box, tools like testdisk, photorec, and ddrescue (for physical damage) my usual go-tos. Of course read and understand exactly what the tools do before you do anything else. If you want to try the Windows route, just google "windows data recovery" with or without the word "free", depending on your available funds for the project. Then work the clone disk to get that data back. Just read, verify, check, and double check that you have the source and target correct before committing. That could easily be done with a live Clonzilla disc. Make that the last time you have to attach this disk until the data is recovered. Whatever you do, I think you need to attempt to image the drive first. If I'm working directly on the disk and trash it, all is lost. Then I work with the image, because if I trash the image I've lost nothing but time. ![]() The first thing I do is attempt to image the disk on a non-Windows box. Or it might be more complicated, where you have to image the disk and work with that image. It might be as simple as connect, mount, read, and copy the data. ![]() That eliminates the possibility that the disk is just messing with Windows and possibly damaging the data. Even so, I would recommend using either a Linux or Mac pc. There are recovery tools for Windows, and they are worth a shot. ![]() This might be an issue where Windows is in the way.
